Top News: American officials announced plans to extend the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan beyond 2016. The specifics of the new policy are yet to be unveiled, though it is likely to include posting some 5,500 troops in Afghanistan for a number of years. Originally, nearly all of the roughly 10,000 American troops stationed in Afghanistan were set to return by the end of next year. Yet a recent resurgence by the Taliban has forced the administration to reconsider the scale of the drawdown. The announcement comes weeks after Taliban fighters briefly captured the northern city of Kunduz, arguably their first most significant military victory in more than a decade. Afghan forces, backed by U.S. airstrikes, have since retaken control of most of the city.
